Rarely in Formula 1 do we see results that genuinely make everyone happy—without exception, all the main figures in the sport feel joy: from passionate fans to the drivers themselves, from team principals to journalists, regardless of their roles or fan affiliations. This remarkable unity occurred on Sunday at the Silverstone Grand Prix when Nico Hulkenberg secured an incredible third place finish. This podium came in extraordinary circumstances during a chaotic race affected by unpredictable weather and followed a difficult Saturday qualifying session where Hulkenberg, representing the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team, had only managed to qualify 19th on the grid. The experienced German driver from Emmerich achieved, quite unexpectedly, his first career podium at the age of 37 after participating in 239 Formula 1 Grand Prix events—a truly unprecedented record in the sport.
Among those most thrilled by Hulkenberg’s outstanding achievement was the reigning Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen. Despite a ten-year age difference, Verstappen has always maintained a warm friendship with the veteran German driver. The Dutch champion celebrated Hulkenberg’s third-place finish almost as if it were his own victory, visibly cheering on track and telling the cameras, “This is the positive highlight of the day! I’m so happy for him making it to the podium; it’s genuinely great to see.” Verstappen also publicly praised Hulkenberg on social media, a platform he typically uses sparingly and with great discretion, making this tribute all the more significant.
In addition to the many personal congratulations Hulkenberg received, he earned a special applause on social platforms from his former teammate at Force India, Sergio Perez. Esteban Ocon also expressed his support and admiration. Ironically, Ocon’s Formula 1 career often saw him take over Hulkenberg’s previous race seats, first at Force India, then Renault, and eventually Haas.
A particularly touching tribute came from Nico Hulkenberg’s current teammate, the rookie Brazilian driver Gabriel Bortoleto. Although Bortoleto was forced to retire early in the race, he closely followed the event from the garage and was among the first to communicate with Hulkenberg over the team radio after the race. He personally congratulated Hulkenberg for his extraordinary result, showing remarkable camaraderie and respect. This moment perfectly embodied the spirit of solidarity: one for all, all for Hulk.
